States Offer Online Gambling

While daily fantasy sports were banned until 2011, they are now legal. The Supreme Court overruled the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act in 2018 and allowed land-based casinos to offer online gambling. However, the legality of online DFS remained unclear in most US states during the DFS boom. However, progress has been made in the legislative front since then.
Despite the federal ban on sports betting, more US states are considering legalizing online sports wagering. While people wager on sports across the country, many do so illegally with unlicensed offshore sportsbooks. Legalizing sports betting allows state regulators to better monitor gambling and identify people who might have gambling problems. However, despite the fact that federal betting laws apply to every state, the laws in each state tend to be more specific. The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) prohibited traditional sports wagering in all states except Nevada. While some states have granted exceptions for some limited forms, the law gave Nevada a virtual monopoly on sports betting. Thankfully, the Supreme Court struck down PASPA in 2018, clearing the way for the legalization of sports betting in the United States.
