The Yorkshire Terrier is like a potato chip, you can’t have just one. Yorkies are great as a couple and you can even have two males or two females without having any disagreements. They are suitable for living indoors and need close company to thrive. Once you have decided to get your Yorkies and take them home, you will need to educate them. Training your Yorkies may be easier than you think. Not only can you train them to defecate on command, but you can also control where they go.

When it comes to training a puppy, one of the first things you have to deal with is food. Everything goes in must come out. Generally speaking, a dog will need to poop 15 to 20 minutes after a meal. The easiest way to housetrain Yorkies is to feed them regular meals and take them out in an acceptable amount of time. After a while you will know when your pup will need to go and thus increase your chances of successfully training your Yorkies to poop at the right time.

As an example, if you feed your Yorkies three meals a day, expect them to have three bowel movements a day. As puppies they should be fed at least three times a day, but as adults that can be reduced to twice a day, maybe even once a day depending on the situation. Training a puppy and making him poop and pee wherever you want is the same when you switch him to a different feeding schedule.

Puppies will need to urinate more frequently than an adult and therefore should be allowed to urinate several times a day. They will often urinate in the same outlet as they defecate, but they will also need to come out more times during the day to urinate. When you start to housebreak a puppy, taking it out often is key. You will need to create a consistent command; “Poop” and “Pee” are good because they are one word and can be preceded by “Go” and/or your Yorkie’s name.

As you begin your training to housebreak any puppy, you should keep your puppy on a leash, even if it is in a fenced yard. This gives you control over where your pup can go. It’s best to start with a loose grip on the leash. Let your Yorkies lead you where they want and when they get away from a certain area, correct them on the leash and lead them back to the appropriate area and make sure you give the proper command while doing so.

Once the deed is done, give lots of praise. Have a conversation with her. Yorkies. “Good girl, poop.” Along with physical contact and petting, this is a good way to train a puppy. Lather, rinse and repeat often until they succeed and you will have mastered the art of puppy training.
