Have you mastered the art of guitar strumming and now you want to become a guitar teacher? Or are you looking for a guitar teacher to teach you how to play the guitar? No matter where you are in the world, be it Singapore, Shanghai or Switzerland, there are certain qualities that a good guitar teacher should have.

1. Patience

One quality that a guitar teacher must have is a lot of patience. You must remember that whoever you are training does not have a musical background. During the guitar lesson, your student may take time to learn strumming techniques. He tries to slow down his teaching pace and guide his student so that he can catch up with the lesson.

2. Broad genre

A good guitar teacher needs to be able to play and teach a wide repertoire of songs. Whether it’s Rhythm and Blues, jazz, pop, rock or sacred music, you need to know the various techniques required for each of these genres. Different people want to learn to play the guitar for different reasons. Some just want to play as a hobby, some want to master the skill of jamming with friends, some people want to perform at church. As such, to be a versatile music teacher, you not only need to know these different genres of performance, but it would also be helpful to collect a variety of sheet music to teach your students.

3. Adaptability/ Creativity

To be an effective guitar teacher, you must adapt to the requirements of your student. Some students have a short time frame in which they want to achieve a fixed goal. Let me give you an example from my music school. One day, John came to our school and informed us that he wanted to learn to play a song on the guitar in four weeks. Her goal for him is to perform that song during his wedding! Our music teacher listened to his request and adapts the content of his music lesson accordingly.

In addition, you must be creative and be able to motivate your students through creative and inspiring teaching methods. Create different teaching approaches to make you stand out from other music teachers. Be unique! Once you stand out from the crowd of many music teachers, your students will seek you out.

Other students want to build a solid foundation in music theory before proceeding with chord harmonizing and strumming. As a music teacher, you must accommodate this request and structure your lessons accordingly.

Well, I have covered three key elements as qualities that a guitar teacher should have. Good luck!
