Kitchen design and layout, like any other trend, has changed dramatically over the years. Today, many homeowners want a clean and uncluttered kitchen design, which is now known as “contemporary design”.

Remember when websites were cluttered with things appearing all over the place, other things blinking, and these annoying little graphics that changed all over the web page? This particular style of website design is long gone since its popular days in the mid to late 90’s.

Kitchen design and layout, like any other trend, has changed dramatically over the years. Today, many homeowners want a clean and uncluttered kitchen design, which is now known as “contemporary design”.

This design style is not quite as isometric, that is, quite square or rectangular in a sense. Although most kitchen granite countertops are following the exterior walls, the real design work is done on islands, breakfast areas, flooring, mosaics, and cabinet design, or desks, using fresher-looking geometric shapes than they reflect clean cut lines to perhaps match a breakfast bar or table area, but keeping it straight enough that it doesn’t look too abstract and out of place.

Leaving plenty of room to move is key to a contemporary design. The last thing you want is to be unable to move freely around your own kitchen. There is nothing worse than having family or friends over and everyone being in the kitchen area having drinks or helping with the food. Avoid this mistake at all costs, even if it means you have to downsize your granite island, or even eliminate your breakfast bar. The kitchen is one of the most important places in your home and it should feel free, not crowded, it should feel clean and tidy. Remember that this is the drop-off point for everyone in the house every morning, for lunch, dinner, and throughout the day for snacks, family gatherings, and more.

Countertops are also an important factor when planning your kitchen layout. I find engineered stone like Aspen Quartz, Silestone, Cambria, or Caesarstone to be very good countertop materials because they provide color consistency and give you a stunning modern (contemporary) look. Be sure to ask for small standard radius corners on your countertops, like ¾” or maybe ½” to give it that clean, straight design look, and try going for standard edges like feathered edge, standard rounding, or maybe even a rim. beveled.

Take your time when planning a kitchen redesign and avoid taking shortcuts at this step. Remember that this is really an investment in your home and family and is not something you can redo at any time. So as the woodworkers say “measure twice, cut once”, get it right the first time!
